Football fans that trooped to the Tucville ground on Wednesday evening to witness the two quarter-final matches in the Namilco Football tournament were treated to an exciting double header, none more thrilling than the match between New Amsterdam United FC and their Victoria King counterparts.
Billed as the supporting match, this encounter had all the ingredients of a World Cup football final, albeit minus the huge crowd and the large rewards.
Football buffs witnessed a no holds barred encounter that certainly underlines the imminent battles as the tournament enters its semi-final stages.
In what was undoubtedly the match of the night, New Amsterdam United and Victoria Kings engaged each other in a match that see sawed its way to an exhilarating penalty kick conclusion.
New Amsterdam United registered goals through Adrian Adams (2, 57) and Kelvin Joseph (49, 62, 69), while Winston Pompey (29, 66, 79, 90) and Pierre Joseph (30) responded for Victoria Kings.
NA United drew first blood when Adams slammed home humdinger, Pompey equalised, while Joseph put Kings ahead. Joseph fired home twice and Adams once to snatch the initiative from the East Coast side, however, Pompey and Joseph traded goals with Pompey being responsible for tying up the scores, forcing penalties.
Even this segment of the game had fans screaming in delight as fortunes swayed from one team to the other. Five penalty kicks were taken and in the end, it was New Amsterdam United that prevailed 3-2, compliments of the superb tactics of their custodian Dirk Henry.
The feature match also had fans screaming but this encounter was more tactical than the first. It was good competitive football where both sides, Camptown and Rhythm Squad, battled for top honours.
The teams ended regulation time at nil all. It was only during the extra time that Lance Rawleston distinguished himself with a 12th minute scorcher that was as incisive as it was decisive for Camptown.
The tournament continues next Friday with the other two-quarter final matches. Western Tigers oppose GFC while Santos and the Guyana Defence Force clash.
