Government Member of Parliament Anil Nandlall yesterday reminded media operatives that the State has a right to respond to the arson attempt on the High Court, a Secondary School and two Police Stations, with lethal force.
Nandlall was at the time speaking during a press briefing held by the Bar Association in conjunction with the Women’s Lawyers Association.
The President of the Bar Association Teni Housty quickly distanced himself from the notion that was raised by Nandlall, saying that the association in no way supports the use of lethal force.
Nandlall in his sentiments said stated that the attacks must be looked at in the light that they were not coincidental in any way and that the High Court and Divisional headquarters of the Police Force were deliberate attacks.
He noted that the attack on the school was also be taken into account, in that the terrorist group wanted to attack the very foundation of the country.
Meanwhile the People’s Progressive Party’s General Secretary Donald Ramotar yesterday issued a statement condemning the attacks adding that the “Terrorist Group seems to have been emboldened by the sustained attacks by the opposition parties and a section of the media on institutions of the State.” Ramotar in his statement said that the gang that imposed its reign of terror in the wee hours of Wednesday morning, appears to be remnants of the earlier gang that had been broken up by the security.
“The same intellectual authors based locally and overseas are clearly bent on upsetting the calm in our society to advance their narrow political agenda.”
He stated that the modus operandi is reminiscent of the attack on the Ministry of Health and, “the PPP wishes to urge the security forces to keep focused in their efforts of catching the group and bringing them to justice before they create any more mayhem reminiscent of the recent event.”
Alliance For Change Leader Raphael Trotman, in response to what Ramotar and Nandlall had stated, said that his party condemns violence in all forms and regrets the loss of life and property that resulted from the recent attack by a gang against the police, the high court and school.
He opined that it is a lame and irresponsible statement made by Ramotar to say that criminals are emboldened by the opposition and sections of the media.
“It is the government’s disregard for the rule of law, the Parliament and the people and its unwillingness to create space that are causing the problems we face today…It is the dismissing of torture claims as “roughing up”, refusing to investigate Lindo Creek, Roger Khan, Ramsammy, GPL to name a few.”
He added also that, “we have to remember that the security forces were unleashed to rein terror and images of Dweive Ramdass and the Leonora youth have now choked people to the point of revulsion.
He added also that the government cancelled the security sector reform plan and has no meaningful interest in seeing an improvement in the security climate. “Blaming others is a coward’s way of reasoning,” Trotman stated.
