Local footballers, already engaged in stiff competition in several tournaments around the country, will compete in yet another, this time a 7-A-Side, Inter-club football tournament in honour of Mayor Hamilton Green’s 75th birth anniversary.
The tournament commences on Monday November 9 and concludes on Saturday December 12. All games are scheduled for the Banks DIH, Thirst Park ground.
Thirty-two teams, placed in eight groups would be contesting for a first prize of $300,000 and a trophy while the second place finishers win $100,000 and a trophy. Teams placing 3rd and 4th take home $60,000 and a trophy, and $40,000 and a trophy, respectively.
Coordinator Lennox Arthur launched the tournament yesterday morning at the mayor’s Office while unveiling the chief sponsor, Macorp.
This entity has donated the first prize winnings and Sales Manager, Lyndon Bentick was on hand to perform the honours. He wished the promoter all the best while committing to future gestures of a similar nature. Mr. Bentick then urged the participants to demonstrate exemplary behaviour even as he encouraged them to play hard to satisfy the entertainment needs of the spectators.
Arthur expressed heartfelt gratitude to the management of Macorp while adding his voice to the call for competitiveness and fair play. He said that some of the nation’s best teams would be on show in matches that football buffs would not want to miss.
The former national coach also disclosed the rules under which participants would be contesting. They pertain to the conduct of the players and the general deportment of teams. These rules, which are very extensive but clear-cut, may be uplifted from Arthur.
The matches will last for twenty minutes and played on a knock out basis.
Players are reminded that all of the rules and requirements will be aligned in tandem with those of the parent body, the GFF.
Meanwhile, fixture for the first night are: Houston Star vs. Crane, Agricola vs. Uitvlugt, Den Amstel vs. Kitty Rangers, Grove Hi Tec vs. Beavers, Flamingo vs. Buxton, Western Tigers vs. YMCA, Conquerors vs. BV Triumph and Pele vs. Plaisance.
All matches start at 18:00hrs sharp.
