…as police seize wrong power cables
The manager of Prem’s Electrical Store located at Regent and Alexander Streets, Lacytown, Georgetown, is peeved that his name has been dragged into a legal issue that is not of his making.
Prem’s Electrical is a major importer of electrical cables and is one of the large distributors of such cables and components in Guyana.
Between August 27, last and September 5, last, the company imported some $30 million worth of cables and other electrical components for the Guyana Power and Light Company.
Manager, Neilnarine Sukhram, said that all his life he has played everything by the book and this recent episode involving two GPL employees and which sought to implicate his company has caused him sleepless nights.
Mr Sukhram said that a perusal of his records would reveal that over the years that he has been in the business of importing and more recently of supplying contracts, he has done everything right.
He said that he has paid his duties and taxes. Value Added Tax on the cables and components imported on August 27, last totaled $960,000. VAT on the imports on September 5, last, was $3.2 million.
He also produced records of imports dating back to July 18, 2009, for which he paid US$70,714.32
He also produced a pile of records indicating payments to the Guyana Revenue Authority.
Mr Sukhram in an interview said that it was unfortunate that the police, in pursuit of their investigation, linked the name of his company to the recent allegations of theft of cables from the Guyana Power and Light.
Mr Sukhram said that some of the cables removed from his company during the police investigation were those used to wire gas stations. They are gasoline and oil-resistant cables.
