Corruption in the security forces has raised its ugly head once again with the arrest of five members of the West Demerara Anti-Crime Unit, during investigations to recover a large quantity of stolen raw gold.
The ranks, a sergeant and four of his juniors, were detained yesterday and could face charges shortly for the theft of more than 20 ounces of raw gold.
Senior police officials have confirmed the arrests and have vowed to ensure that no stones are left unturned to see that justice prevails.
This newspaper understands that the gold, which belonged to Brazilian miners, was stolen at Parika sometime earlier this week.
The Police Anti-Crime Unit on the West Demerara was contacted, and having been provided with information on the suspected thief, carried out their own investigations.
According to police sources, the ranks arrested the suspect and recovered all the stolen gold.
But their corrupt nature led them down the wrong road.
One source said that the men in their attempt to cover up their plan, released the suspect after giving him one ounce of gold without recording the incident in the station diary.
They reportedly divided the remainder among themselves.
But their luck ran out when the real owners of the gold turned up and found out that the suspect had been released.
They eventually confronted him and found him with the ounce of gold that was handed back to him by the police.
The suspect then blew the whistle on the corrupt cops and they were promptly ordered arrested by the District Detective Officer.
It is not clear if any gold was found in the possession of any of the ranks.
