Dear Editor,
Horrified!! Is mildly expressing the way I felt as I flicked to the front page of the Kaieteur News newspaper last Saturday morning and saw the most graphic and disconcerting image of the severely burnt genital area of a 14-year-old boy who was tortured by members of the Guyana Police Force.
I usually read the papers from the back going forward (disclosure – I am a huge sports fan) scanning for anything that pops at me. Somehow the editorial did that and I was eventually led to page 12 for the story that wrenched my heart and stirred my disgust. I have to say though, even reading that couldn’t have prepared me for what I was to see on the front page. I saw a pattern of brutality that was allowed to fester, once again burst open like a ripe abscess, this time it seemed to have spilled farther than ever. I saw a young man scarred for life, not just physically, but emotionally, I saw his parents’ bleeding heart, I saw a scared citizenry – scared at the thought of being suspected of any crime and having to be put in the custody of the police, scared that they may never again see the light of day or that they wouldn’t come out in one piece.
That was chilling, what I saw. The way these heartless men would try to extract information from a boy…a boy for goodness sake! By setting alight his genital area and to top it, keeping him hidden from his parents for days without receiving the proper medical attention for his injuries.
If these police officers couldn’t use conventional means to elicit information from a youngster, then it says to me that they were only interested in getting him to say what they wanted him to say. I am quite certain that if he has anything to do with the crime, intense interrogation by educated and skilled men would be sufficient to gather the information necessary to prosecute him.
Now instead of focusing on solving the murder of Mr. Bisram, his unfortunate death is overshadowed by the inhumane, disgusting, barbaric actions of the investigating officers perpetrated against a minor.
I confess that I harbour thoughts of torturing criminals whenever I get overly emotional, but this is not a criminal we’re talking about. At least he’s not found to be guilty of any crime. Not just yet.
As a sister of five brothers, an aunt of two wonderful nephews (one about the same age as this young man) and relative and friend to countless males, I could have easily seen their photograph on that front page, in fact I did and that’s what bleeds my heart. Please, make it stop!
