The Theme for Road Safety Month is Be Vigilant, Be wise, Practise Road Safety to Stay Alive.
Motor vehicle accidents, which are preventable occurrences, are the ninth leading cause of injury, death and disability around the world, with an average of about 13,000 fatalities per day.
Unfortunately, Guyana has an average rate for motor vehicle accidents of 21.8 for every 100,000 people, which is above the 19 in every 100,000-world average.
Chairman of the National Road Safety Council (NRSC), Surendra Khayyam, said that the council launched a School Patrol Manual on Tuesday along with the necessary tools that are needed for schools to practice road safety.
There will be a month of activities to celebrate because people would be reminded through the month of road safety whenever they see activities that would be held around Guyana especially in regions three, six and in collaboration with region ten road safety council.
The NRSC was formed to ensure law and order is maintained on the roadways, and this year the NRSC is targeting schools so students can capture the message, as they are the most susceptible to being victims.
The coordinator of the NRSC, Romana Doorgen, said that there will be a memorial walk to remember accident victims and persons can bring a picture, while a memoriam will be held on Main Street where accident victim’s families can paste their pictures on a designated wall.
The chairman said that the first week would deal with the launching of School Road Safety booklets and working in collaboration with a school to paint pedestrian crossings.
“The second week we will be visiting crash victims in the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation and will have a drive seminar to engage the Governmental and Private Sector Organisations”.
“The third Sunday is World Day of Remembrance for accident victims where we will be taking pictures off the Wall that would be on Main Street Georgetown and placing them in the newspapers. At the end of the month we will be recording the successes of every school that is knowledgeable of Road safety.”
