…as Red Thread denounces silent Guyanese
The Leonora Police Station yesterday attracted a modest group of persons affiliated with Red Thread who lead a picketing exercise in protest of the torture that was committed on a 14 year-old boy whilst he was in custody at that station.
Karen De Souza, who spoke on behalf of the group, said that for too long Guyanese have been silent on the issue of torture that has been perpetrated on citizens by members of the law enforcement agencies
She was adamant that the time has come to draw the line on torture in Guyana.
According De Souza that organisation is adamant in sending a strong message to the police that, “we are not putting up with this anymore.”
She added, too, that her groups will be liaising with other such groups to come up with a course of action “because we do believe that Guyana has to draw a line and so far the assurance we are receiving are not very impressive.”
She also expressed concern that there is now information, which suggests that the Commissioner of Police had known of the issue before this publication even made it known to the public.
“We cannot simply do nothing; we have to talk with other organisations in Guyana to see what people are prepared to do…Guyana has been quiet for far too long.”
She was also adamant that it must not only be the two ranks currently behind bars to be reprimanded given that there are more than one tiers to the level of criminality that took place.
De Souza is adamant that the ranks that knew what was happening and did not do anything to prevent it are also culpable as well as the senior ranks that attempted to cover up the torture.
She said that even if a person is accused of a most heinous crime the police still have to act in a professional manner regardless of if it is a child or an adult.
De Souza was also adamant that at the end of the day the buck ultimately stops with the commander in chief of the joint services.
She said that in the past the Police have undertaken fruitless inquiries and coupled with the fact that the Police Force attempted to cover up the act then any investigation done by the force could not be trusted.
She was adamant that the incident warrants an independent inquiry to ascertain the level of culpability among the ranks of the Guyana Police Force as well as just how high up the hierarchy the criminality existed.
