As they seek to encourage young players focusing on academic excellence, Pele Football Club recently rewarded one of its Under-13 players, Nathanael King, for his success at the last National Grade Six Examinations.
King, who attained a place at the Bishops High School, received a cheque from the club which represented a refund of the costs for the purchase of all his first form text books. The presentation took place on Sunday last during a family fun day organised by Pele FC.
Executives of the club had promised the young defence player and parents that the club would cover the costs of all his first form text books as a reward for his successful academic achievements.
According to a release from the club, King’s achievement has been attained at a time when young local footballers seem to have forgotten the importance of education to their overall development. “His performance shows that both sports and academics can be pursued simultaneously with great success. Pele FC wishes young Nathanael the brightest academic future as well as a glittering football career and hopes his achievement serves as an example and motivation to other young athletes, especially footballers.”
Guyana’s first Major League Footballer, Gregory Richardson, was on hand to hand over the cheque to King and encouraged him to continue the pursuit of his education in addition to wishing him well in his future football career.
The young man said he was delighted to meet and learn of Richardson’s football exploits as they shared a few light moments following the presentation.
