The Inter gym boxing card that was scheduled to be staged at the Scott School Ground last Saturday evening has been rescheduled to this Saturday, November 7 and the promoters have promised a night of fistic fury.
Heavy rains had inundated the venue last week Saturday, forcing a postponement. This week, the promoters have resorted to the old venue but an alternative venue, the New Amsterdam Multilateral School, has been secured.
The card is an indication of determination demonstrated by several affiliates of the sport who, after being fed up with the state of affairs, decided to take a proactive stance. It was after deliberations and discussions that this tournament was born. To date boxing buffs have been entertained with several cards staged at the Forgotten Youth Foundation and the Harpy Eagles Boxing Gyms.
This card signals the intention of local boxing enthusiasts to provide adequate and constant activity for local boxers while preparing them for international duty.
Seventeen bouts are carded for the night and four gyms would be battling for top honours.
They are the Forgotten Youth Foundation, Harpy Eagles, the Guyana Defence Force and the Pocket Rocket Boxing Gym.
Promoters of the programme and coach of the Pocket Rocket Boxing Gym, Orland Rogers disclosed that he intends to incorporate boxers from the Ancient County into local boxing activities. He said that the aim of the exercise is to ensure that boxers from every region get an opportunity to showcase their skill in preparation for international duties.
Some of the Berbicians that will be on show are, Cadet Flyweight, Richard Williamson, middleweight (in the junior category), Kelsey George and U-15 boxer, Jamal Eastman. Rogers also disclosed that light/heavyweight boxer, Sherwin Clark, a new find from Berbice would also showcase his skills. He is billed to oppose a boxer from the Forgotten Youth Foundation. “This fight will be a scorcher,” Rogers disclosed. He also said that there is much talent in Berbice waiting to be nurtured.
The corporate community has rendered support to the successful staging of the card and the promoters are very thankful for the gestures.
Some of the business entities out of Berbice are, Blue Ridge Wireless, Future Vision DVD, A Alli and Sons, Universal Solutions, Candy Shop and Bobb and Sons. Candy Shop of Camp Street and North Road, Georgetown also pitched in with corporate help.
Notwithstanding such support, the promoters wish to encourage further support from the business community. “This is the only way that we can continue to provide meaningful activity for local boxers,” said Rogers.
The first bell sounds at 18:30hrs sharp.
