As Guyana and the Combined College and Campus team go after each other in a day/night encounter at the National Stadium, Providence later today, West Indies batting star, Shivnarine Chanderpaul is confident that Guyana would win the encounter and set up a thrilling encounter between the winning team in the Trinidad and Tobago/Barbados encounter, contested yesterday.
Guyana field a relatively inexperienced side but with the likes of Ramnaresh Sarwan and Shivnarine Chanderpaul not to mention Travis Dowlin, the local lads have the potential to turn the tide in Guyana’s favour at any stage of the match. Yesterday afternoon Kaieteur Sport caught up with Chanderpaul as he browsed through the sports items at Universal Sports, Fifth Street, Alberttown and he acquiesced to a brief interview.
We first asked him to share his thoughts on the resolution of the impasse between the West Indies Cricket Board (WIBC) and several key players that had rescinded their services while citing several vacuums within the administration that necessitated attention.
He said that he was indeed saddened by the turn of events and felt very glad that it was over. Chanderpaul said that during the standoff he was pained after observing a second string WI side losing the Caribbean series to lowly rated Bangladesh. “That is now history but the fact that Bangladesh could beat us in our own backyard is extremely hurting.
When one reads the history book it will always say that WI, not a second string West Indies side, lost to Bangladesh so obviously all West Indians would feel hurt by that loss,” he said.
The cricket star said that he is willing to put that loss behind him and move on to the next assignment in Australia later this month.
Chanderpaul debunks the view that the unity of the regional side would be affected by the recent impasse. “During the impasse most of the guys were playing competitive cricket. We are quite capable of making the necessary transition to play as a unit,” he confidently disclosed.
Commenting on today’s match against at the Combined College and Campus team Chanderpaul said, “Almost everyone regards this encounter as a walk over for the local team but no team can be written off.
The Combined College and Campus can come out today firing and we might have to really be at our best to beat them. That’s the nature of cricket and we are not taking any team lightly,” he said.
Despite this view, Chanderpaul is eagerly anticipating a Guyana/Trinidad and Tobago clash in the finals. “After performing so well in the (just concluded) Champion League, Trinidad would be extremely confident. They have a good batting line up but their bowling is a bit inexperienced so we would have to exploit that,” Chanderpaul said.
Despite such confidence, the West Indies batting star is adamant that the local side should await the results of the Trinidad/Barbados match before making predictions.
He remains adamant that his boys should concentrate on today’s game against the Combined College and Campus. “We will take them as they come,” he philosophized.
