Help and Shelter and the Guyana Public Service Union (GPSU) have joined the list of organizations condemning the torture by Police of a 14-year-old boy.
Help and Shelter said the allegations of horrendous torture of the boy leveled at members of the Guyana Police Force highlight the ambivalence with which our society treats the use of violence.
“No human being deserves to be subjected to violence in any form,” Help and Shelter stated. The Guyana Police Force is expected to serve and protect the public and the use of any excessive force by its members is against all principles of human rights to which Guyana has formally subscribed, the organization stated. It quoted the constitution which says: “No person shall be subjected to torture or to inhuman or degrading punishment or other treatment.”
Help & Shelter called on the government to ensure that the child receives proper medical attention, including psychosocial support, and that he and his family are protected from any further forms of abuse.
A thorough investigation into the allegations should be immediately conducted, the perpetrators punished with the full force of the law and the responsible officers held accountable for the brutality that has happened under their purview, Help and Shelter declared.
Meanwhile, the GPSU said the “criminal act” of setting ablaze this teenager is beyond the imagination of any human being and such reprehensible conduct of some Police officers is of serious concern to the Executive Council of the Union.
“There can be no justification for torture of any kind to human beings and the Guyanese population has a final chance to express its concerns now,” the GPSU stated.
The Union said Guyana is a signatory to the United Nations Convention against Torture and it is time that this Convention be respected and enforced.
“The time for ‘lip’ service to this Convention and the violation of the rights of Guyanese must be halted and it is the responsibility of all of us as citizens to ensure that our human rights are protected,” the GPSU stated.
