Weather could hurt Bajan’s title hopes today
By Sean Devers
Sometimes when there is divine intervention there is nothing that can be done to change fate and today Barbados will be desperately hoping that they can get a chance to try to halt defending champions Trinidad and Tobago’s charge to their 2nd major cricket final in just over a week.
However the reality is that today’s first semi-final of the President’s Cup Regional 50 overs cricket competition set for the Guyana National Stadium could be decided by rain, once again Guyana’s cricket bugbear.
With a win, a washed out game and a loss to zone leaders Guyana, Barbados are one win away from the final of a competition which has been severely affected by rain (all but one of the matches in the last 2 rounds were washed out) but the weather forecast from the
Timehri Meteorological Office predicts thunder storms and a 30% chance of precipitation today.
While the Providence Stadium is one of the fastest drying cricket grounds in the world, more rain today could wash away Barbados’ hopes since if the game is abandoned the team with the higher points from the preliminary round will go through to Thursday’s final.
T&T who lost to New South Wales of Australia in final the Champions League in India last week, began their campaign with an emphatic 90-run win against Jamaica before 2 points from washed out matches against the Windwards & CCC respectively gave them the top position in zone ‘B’ with 8 points from 3 matches.
Although the sun came out in all of its brilliance yesterday morning overcast conditions was again evident by late afternoon and prospects of a full 100 overs in the Day/Nigh game, scheduled to commence at 13:30hrs, are not great.
Led by astute Captaincy from Daren Ganga, the T&T train is on a roll and even when the players must have been exhausted from their long trip from India, they produced wonderful team cricket less than 10 hours after arriving in the Guyana early Wednesday morning to successfully defend the 201-9 off 44 overs they made against Jamaica.
Pre-tournament favorites, T&T will want their batsmen to produce big scores on what should be another low and slow track and will look to Adrian Barath, Lindl Simmons, the Bravo siblings, Kieron Pollard, Denish Ramdin, the Ganga brothers and Dave Mohamed while Ravi Rampaul, leg-spinner Samuel Badree (who could share the new ball with Rampaul), Pollard, Bravo and the spin of Mohamed and Sherwin Ganga could make life difficult for the Bajan batsmen in conditions that better suite their style of cricket.
The Bajans batting will hinge around Martin Nurse, Kirk Edwards, Ryan Hinds, Carlo Morris, Jonathan Carter, Dwayne Smith, Alcindo Holder and Sulieman Benn who is their leading run scorer with 66 runs for 2 matches.
Tino Best, Kemar Roach, Smith and left-arm spinners Hinds and Benn will hope to restrict the T&T batting as Barbados hunt a place in their first final since they lost to Guyana in 2005 at Bourda.
The winner of today’s match will face the winner of tomorrow’s 2nd semi-final between host Guyana and CCC at the same venue in Thursday’s finale.
