NEW AMSTERDAM, BERBICE – With one week left before the opening of the 49th Annual Track and Field, Swimming, and Cycling Championship, the local organising committee said plans are on schedule.
The event, which is expected to attract some 1,600 students from across Guyana between November 10th and 13th, would be hosted by Region Six – East Berbice/Corentyne. Public Relations Officer of the local committee, Christopher Holder said that the Albion Community Center Ground is undergoing aesthetic changes and would be in top shape for the event.
All physical rehabilitation on the venue is being executed jointly by the Region Six Administration and the Guyana Sugar Corporation East Berbice Estates. Sanitary facilities on the ground are to be rehabilitated; the fence, the main pavilion and stairway are all being addressed.
The Cropper, Belvedere, and Albion Primary Schools would be transformed into the Games Village. The necessary work to upgrade them began four weeks ago. The job entails the construction of kitchens, sanitary and cooking facilities at these institutions. The entire cost for the physical preparation is being undertaken by the Region Six Administration.
In mid-September, the 49th Annual Track and Field, Swimming, and Cycling Championship was launched at the Albion Community Centre Ground.
That was the first time the launching took place in Region Six. The local organising committee for the 49th Annual Track and Field, Swimming and Cycling Championship is headed by Region Six Chairman, Zulfikar Mustapha.
There are seven sub-committees, each with their own Chairperson. The Accommodation Committee is headed by Region Six Vice-Chairman, Dennis Deroop.
Other sub-committees include the Infrastructure which is led by Region Six Engineer Paul Lyken; Health – Chief Executive Officer of the Berbice Health Authority, Dr. Vishwa Mahadeo and Security – Commander of Division ‘B’ of the Guyana Police Force Assistant Commissioner George Alexander Vyphuis.
The Guyana Power and Light, Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company and the Guyana Water Inc. are also a part of the Infrastructure Committee.
The seven sub-bodies have already held several weekly meetings to fine tune plans. Last Thursday the group met at the Region Six Boardroom to review preparations. According to Mr. Holder, there would be athletes from 16 districts competing for top honours.
Holder said he is pleased with the progress and predicts smooth sailing.
The opening ceremony is expected to include a cultural presentation and physical display on November 10th at 16:30 hours. The participants in this segment, who are drawn from primary and secondary schools across the East Berbice/Corentyne, began going through the paces three weeks ago.
The 48th Annual Track and Field, Swimming and Cycling Championship was last held in Linden, Region Ten.
