It was a packed evening at the National Stadium for Agri-Fest on Saturday night as the lines were long and families turned out in their numbers to fulfill there curiosity in the cool and pleasant atmosphere.
The booths and displays were many and the various organisations dealing with Agricultural issues came out to educate patrons.
The various business organisations displayed their products and information for consumers to be enlightened of the benefits that can be garnered.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Private sectors that were present included Neal and Massy Guyana Group, Savannah Premium Produce, Swiss Machinery, Guyana Youth Business Trust (GYBT), Guyana Sugar Corporation (GUYSUCO), Institute of Private Enterprise Development (IPED), Caterpillar, Aquaculture Prospectus for Guyana, Caribbean Chemicals, Marine Fisheries in Guyana, Ministry of Agriculture Hydrometerlogical Services, Inter American Institute for Co-operation on Agriculture, Guyana Marketing Co-operation, Agriculture Export Diversification Programme and Ministry Of Agriculture Cassava Cultivation, Natural Pesticides, and Pepper Cultivation.
In a brief history of the sugar sector in Guyana, Senior Communications officer of Guysuco, Romel Roopnarine said that while GuySuCo is in the process of modernisation, many people are not aware of it because of the machines that are now being introduced to develop the sugar industry.
These machines include the bed loader where the machine fetches the cut cane to punts and this reduces their workload while production is increased. However, he reiterated that the company is not putting people out of jobs.
“However, people think whenever we talk of modernisation and mechanical we are automatically talking of unemployment, the public being fully aware of our current financial difficulties. Part of the blue print to save this industry is to increase production by over 400,000 tonnes in the not too distant future and by doing that we need a larger, more committed work force and better trained workforce,” Roopnarine told Kaieteur News.
A part from the modernisation efforts and reconfiguration of the land, it was explained that GuySuCo has to work on the labour aspect and stabilising the company’s financial status.
Meanwhile, Minister of Agriculture, Robert Persaud, said the festival is just a glimpse to the wider Guyanese public of what is being done by the Agricultural sector.
Director of the Environmental Health Unit, Ashok Sukdeo, explained that the department protects public health in the country as its objective is for food safety and food security at the household, market and factory levels.
Also at the fest, was the mutton curry competition which was won by Chilly’s Bar which won a trophy and hamper along with a sheep. Second place went to Montrose Crew and third place to Abrahim mutton crew who all won trophies and hampers.
