Gears for All-Star Senior title defence
By Edison Jefford
Linden has opted for the inclusion of all their ‘big’ All-Stars into the senior team, as they gear for a title defence in the Senior Beepat Scorpions All-Star game against Georgetown when the event bounces off Saturday at the Sports Hall.
It was clear from the release of the Linden Amateur Basketball Association (LABA) team that the defending champs opted for more height against Georgetown in a bid to overhaul their long-standing nemesis for the second straight year.
Linden went for Kings’ Jason Alonzo and Marvin Hartman; Patriots’ Neil Marks; Royals Dwayne Roberts; Pistons’ Quincy Jones and Trevor Profitt in the forward positions of the senior team to clearly indicate their ‘big’ intentions.
Jets’ Neil Simon and Kevin Joseph; Pistons’ Nevin Grenville and Louis James were those selected on the 10-man team to deal with the point and shooting guard responsibilities but still, except for Joseph, there is a bit of height among them.
LABA President, Abdullah Hamid was asked at a press conference at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall on Friday if the emphasis on height was deliberate and he explained that the rationale behind the association’s selection was balance.
“A team must be balanced with height, strength and talent being some of the areas to look at. We judge our players from tournaments and when we looked at it, the big guys are the ones that are producing right now,” Hamid indicated.
Linden blew away Georgetown in the Senior All-Star game last year will lead the contest for the championship again this weekend. Calvin Slow and Kester Jeffrey were named as the two coaches for the Linden Senior All-Star team.
Georgetown has named a 13-man shortlist with the axe to determine the final 10 expected to fall on five tomorrow.
Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association Secretary, Robert Cadogan believes that the final selection will be the best.
“We are trying to come up with our best teams because Georgetown lost last year.
We are selecting the team based on performance.
We are not taking this as Showtime,” he stated at the press briefing held for sub-associations on Friday.
Cadogan said that height will not intimidate Georgetown, however.
He said that the team will understand that they have a job to do and will execute that with efficiency.
Cadogan, Mark Agard and Phillip George are Georgetown’s Coaches.
The Georgetown 13-man Senior squad include Hodayah Stewart (Macabbees); Kevin Lawrence, Darcel Harris and Ryan Gullen (Ravens); Naylon Loncke, Stephon Gillis and Royston Siland (Courts Pacesetters); Ryan Melville and Richard Braithwaite (Pepsi Sonics); Pelham Doris (Nets); Vivian Alder (Bounty Colts); Yannick Wade (Demerara Panthers); Travis Foster.
