Dear Editor,
I am very troubled by the following utterances from our Police Commissioner to the media. I quote; “Mark Benschop was detained because his behaviour and conduct displayed was one of defiance of Government and a Government institution and this will not be condoned. We have to send a strong message that people should co-operate.”
Isn’t this indicative of an existence under a political dictatorship and its thugs? Doesn’t this sound similar to the phantom’s modus operandi a few years ago?
It is embarrassing and very frightening for every Guyanese who are against the present government. While Mr. Greene may not intend for his utterance to be interpreted as such, it must be understood that Guyanese are an intelligent people and such words by the Commissioner indicate that every citizen better shape up or be thrown in jail for being insolent.
What is also frightening is the fact that the NFMU and not the police have the power to break into a man’s place of residence to search for a transmitter. I was of the opinion that search warrants were ordered via the court system and not a Justice of the Peace. Moreover, the warrant was wrongly addressed but instead of having it corrected, the police arrested Mark and allowed this agency to break into the man’s house and searched it in his absence.
According to the Police Commissioner, “…the NFMU, using their powers under the warrant were able to break the house, entered and we’re told that they found a transmitter.” Doesn’t this imply that the police weren’t present when Mark’s house was being searched and this therefore raises the troubling question as to how many law enforcement agencies exist in Guyana?
I have come to realise that Guyana is a country where it is very easy for an innocent man to be made a criminal due to the lack of justice under this government. It is just a matter of time before such attitude by the government/NFMU become pervasive.
Further, I am very much afraid for individuals like Mark Benschop, Freddie Kissoon, Norris Witter and Lincoln Lewis who are in the forefront of the struggle against the current abuses of power in Guyana.
There is the possibility of these men being arrested, detained and dying mysteriously in custody. Remember, justice is a fleeting phenomenon in Guyana.
