Figures released from the Guyana Police Force have revealed that there has been a reduction in murders and other categories of serious crimes so far for this year as compared to last year.
So far for this year there have been 95 murders as compared to 136 for the corresponding period last year. Of the 95 murders, three were execution style, 14 were committed during robberies, 18 were domestically related, 36 were classified disorderly, 23 were of unknown determination and there was one other.
According to the figures, ‘A’ Division recorded most of the murders — of 23; ‘D’, ‘F’ and ‘E’ Division, 18 each; ‘B’ Division, 10; ‘C’ Division, 16; and ‘G’ Division, three. Of the 95 murders, 66 of these have been solved.
Also, there has been a reduction in the number of robberies so far for this year. From January 1 to date, there have 746 robberies under arms as compared to 921 in 2008.
Meanwhile, Assistant Commissioner, Law Enforcement, Seelall Persaud said these successes are as a result of their intensified approach towards crime fighting.
According to Persaud, the destabilising of certain rings around the country may have resulted in the decrease in criminal activities.
He further pointed to the success in breaking up a notorious gang in Berbice where a group of six men has been arrested and charged with a total of 16 counts of robbery under arms in that area.
The Crime Chief also made mention of their success in the ‘GuySuCo pay roll heist’ for which persons were arrested charged and killed during a shoot out shortly after the incident.
“We feel that the dents we manage to put in these and other rings have somewhat deterred person who had it in their minds to be apart of organised crimes,” Persaud said. Mention was also made of the several kidnapping rings which were broken in Berbice and Georgetown as well as several high profile murders being solved.
Persaud added that the capturing of several suspected gang members of the notorious ‘Fine man gang’ may also be responsible for the reduction.
“We have managed to arrest and charge three men for a murder in the Pomeroon which was a high profile case,” Seelall added.
The Crime Chief further lauded the efforts of the office ranks who from time to time step to the task when they are called out of their offices from Wednesday to Saturday. The ranks from the Tactical Services Unit as well and the Special Branch were also lauded for their efforts.
In addition, Seelall noted that despite the fact, the public had lost some amount of confidence in local law enforcement but they did manage to build back some amount of public trust. On this note, mention was made of the arrest of three coast guard ranks who were arrested and charged for the murder of Dweive Ramdasss.
He added, too, that investigations are currently ongoing into the most recent murders on the Island Princess.
