As Agriculture Month winds down, more than 100 small farmers countrywide received pigs, sheep and fish fingerlings as a boost to their capacity.
Braving rains at the Ministry of Agriculture, Regent Road, farmers were warned by Minister Robert Persaud, not to waste the efforts of government but rather to use it to improve on the ongoing agriculture diversification programme by government.
Some 70 pigs, 41 black belly sheep and male tilapia fingerlings were distributed.
Persaud told the farmers that the government has made a significant injection of livestock to the industry as this was part of the larger agricultural diversification programme.
The distribution, which is currently ongoing, is happening on a quarterly basis and so far over 1000 farmers would have benefitted, Persaud disclosed.
He reminded the farmers that part of the agreement in return for the livestock is to ensure that other farmers would receive the offspring. In that way the project would blossom out.
There were a number of rice farmers from the Mahaica area who to supplement their income also received the livestock.
There is a lot of interest in the export of beef, poultry and aqua-culture, the Ministry noted. He noted that several veterinarians are returning yearly to boost that animal health department.
With not many farmers adhering to guidelines of good animal husbandry practices, he urged farmers to use these services which are free. Noting that the agriculture diversification programme is not a cheap one, Persaud pointed out that there may come a time when the programme will have to end so the opportunity to make maximum use of it must be now.
Also speaking at the distribution exercise was Technical Manager of the Ministry, Joseph McAllister, who noted that almost 25 per cent of farmers are in some way or the other involved in livestock rearing.
The government’s breeding programme had commenced two years ago with several farmers in the different regions benefitting. The Guyana Defence Force, the Guyana School of Agriculture and the National Agriculture Research Institute are also involved in the breeding programme.
