Rain could deny Jamaica semi-final spot
By Sean Devers
Jerome Taylor returned to the Jamaica team after illness with 2 wickets in the opening over of his team’s 2nd round President’s Cup regional 50 overs cricket match against CCC at Bourda yesterday.
However, the West Indies pacer’s effort was in a wasted one as rain had the final say after 12.1 overs with CCC on 41-2 and if rain washes out the Trinidad and Tobago/ CCC clash at Everest today, Jamaica will be out of ‘final four’ even if they beat the Windwards at Enmore in their final game today.
When rain stopped play at 10:12hrs, Romel Currency was unbeaten on 10 and Nikolai Parris on 16 and with more rain forecast for the city today, Jamaica, who lost to T&T in the opening round after suffering a similar fate in last year’s semi-finals in Guyana, could be denied a semi-final spot.
Left-hander Omar Phillips, who played 2 Tests against Bangladesh due to the industrial action taken by the senior players against the WICB, was beaten for pace and bowled with the first ball of the match while Jamaican left-hander Simon Jackson (4) who cover-drove a Taylor full toss for 4, was trapped LBW in a successful opening over from Taylor, who like Skipper Chris Gayle and Shawn Findley, has recovered from the ‘flu’ and returned to action.
Currency (10*) and Parris (16*) batted sedately in overcast conditions as they repaired the early damage on a slow track which produced some disconcerting bounce for Darren Powell just off a good length from the Southern end.
Vincentian Currency faced 30 balls while Parris batted 40 balls and hit 2 fours as the 3rd wicket pair shared in an unfinished 37-run stand as Taylor finished with 2-14 from 5 overs.
Defending Champions Trinidad and Tobago had to settle for 2 points from their washed out match at Uitvlugt against the Windward Islands to move to 6 points and a semi-final place while the Leeward Island/TCLG West Indies U-19 game at Providence was called off with the Leewards on 37-0 in 6 overs with Kieron Powell on 23 and Chesney Hughes on 3. Both the Leewards and West Indies youths lost their first round matches and with 2 points with a solitary game each in hand, can no longer reach the semis.
If one of the teams (T&T and CCC) gains a victory today at Everest, Jamaica can still squeeze in the semi-finals if they register an emphatic win against the Windwards today, since today’s loser at Everest will stay on 6 points and Jamaica will also move to 6 points.
The 2nd semi-final spot will then be decided on net run rate.
Guyana, who beat the Leewards and Barbados, are the only team with 2 wins and 8 points and are already assured of a place in the semi-final even if they lose their final game today against the TCLG West Indies under-19 team at Bourda.
