Eight more contracts were awarded during the last cabinet session. This is according to Head of the Presidential Secretariat and Cabinet Secretary Dr. Roger Luncheon.
At the time Luncheon was addressing members of the media at his weekly press conference at the Office of the President yesterday.
Luncheon stated that the contracts were in the Public Works and Security sectors.
The Cabinet Secretary said that $15.79 M is going to be pumped into another phase of traffic light installation. This time the lights would be strategically placed at Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara.
Among the other allocations, some $22.09M is expected to be spent on the rehabilitation of the Patentia Public Road in region three; $23.6 M is slated for more infrastructural works at the Mahdia Air strip in region eight and $57.8M was procured for the installation of street lights from Vreed-en-Hoop to Parika on the West Coast of Demerara.
In the regional system, US$421,000 has been allocated for rural electrification, including the supply of goods for the distribution and transmission network upgrade in Lethem, St Cuthbert’s Mission and Maraikobai.
There was also approval for the procurement of 1701 meters at a cost of US$241,000.
Luncheon was asked if the meters were the ordinary meters or the prepaid meters, to which he opined the latter, due to the cost.
And the rehabilitation of the capital offence dormitory at the Camp Street Prison would be boosted with $17.7M while another $191.1M is approved for the purchase of police uniforms.
Another eight contracts were earlier awarded by the cabinet.
The first contract was awarded for $49.4M for the River Defence Works at Moleson Creek, Berbice.
The GCAA/Ogle Airport was awarded 168.8M Euros for the supply of airport runaway lights and the guidance system, which is in keeping with the second phase of the development of the airport.
$200M was allocated for arms and ammunition, while the procurement for body protection equipment stands at $106M.
In region four, the rehabilitation of Quamina Street in Beteverwagting would see a further $21.4M allocation.
Moreover Linden’s water sector is expected to be boosted with the Government awarding a contract to drill a well at Amelia’s Ward, which is estimated to cost some $9M.
In the Human Services sector, a contract was awarded for the construction of a facility for the homeless at region 5. That home is estimated to cost $340.8M.
Some $207M was allocated for the procurement of a container scanner.
