It was sweet revenge for the young ‘Golden Jaguars’ line up under the astute captaincy of Howard ‘Twin Tower’ Lowe when they humbled home team Suriname 1-0 in the feature game on the opening night of the inaugural Suriname Independence Cup 2009 played at the Andre Kamperveen Stadion, Paramaribo, on Wednesday evening.
Going in as the underdogs, but playing with great discipline and heart, the ‘Golden Jaguars’ on the back of a 66th minute goal by the ever hunting Devon Millington, silenced the home fans to record a well earned win. Guyana now sits at the top of the points table along with French Guiana who defeated the Netherlands Antilles 4-1 with 3 points each. Suriname and the Netherlands are without a point.
Lowe, who earned the name ‘Twin Tower’ for forming a solid wall teaming up with former captain and fellow defender Charles Pollard for Guyana, led his charges skillfully and with four players making their debut, the win was well earned.
First half exchanges were even as both teams shared ball possession and made a few attempts at goal but more importantly, Guyana did not allow the host team, who were confident of knocking their rivals over, any leverage in the final third as they defended solidly.
The tall, well built and experienced Surinamese players were never allowed to impose their will on the younger and less experienced lads from the Land of Many Waters, the visitors combining their collective skills to slow the pace of the game and keep the ball away from playmaker, Emilio Limon, who came to the fore through the Digicel Kick Start Clinics last year.
The second half saw Guyana more energetic as they sensed their opponents’ frustration in not having things their way. Suriname did enjoy some good periods but Lowe and his charges bided their time and always looked dangerous in attack.
Their {Guyana}chance to celebrate came when the game was 66 minutes old, Millington collected a pass just outside the attacking third dribbled his way past three defenders before slapping the ball past the advancing Ronnie Aloema into the back of the nets from the six yard range.
Coach Wayne Dover and his technical team utilised four of the five available changes in the final half hour of the game as they sought to maintain the advantage. Suriname was reduced to 10 in the 72nd minute when substitute Romeo Jomena was given marching orders for serious foul play committed against Lowe. Jomena was injected into the game a mere 5 minutes earlier.
Donning national colours for the first time were Colin Nelson, Marlon Benjamin, Jamal Bready and Mervin Joseph.
Benjamin replaced Warren Gilkes in the 63rd minute, Joseph came in for Peter Parks in the 75th, Breedy was injected in the 82nd minute for Millington and two minutes later, Brion Baker, who played defence for the first time having played as a midfielder before, made way for the Suriname based, Javin Crawford.
Suriname made two other subs but they never were able to rebound with the ‘Jaguars taking charge of their Jungle’ according to Dover.
Lowe acknowledged that the Surinamese are a very good team, made up of a lot of experienced players but his young team which he has lots of confidence in, knew that they would have been coming at them and they {Guyana} worked the plan that they had devised.
“We have played Suriname a lot of times and we knew that we had to play a patient game which frustrated them to our benefit.
We kept the ball away from them for long periods and played as a unit in attack and defence and it has brought the bacon home for us. The boys know that the job is not done as yet so we will refocus on the other teams we have to face come Friday (today) and Sunday.”
Guyana, now with a chance of winning the tournament will face the Netherlands Antilles this evening in the opening game from 19:00hrs (18:00hrs Guyana time) with the hosts taking on French Guiana in the night capper two hours later.
French Guiana got their winning goals against the Netherlands from David Martinon (5, 37), Anthony Yenoumou (57) and Cedric Pellage in the 87th. Netherlands consolation was scored by Riangelo Rodriquez in the 40th.
The game was contested in pouring rain, lightening and thunder.
At the end of both games (injury time) black out intervened.
The referee in both cases blew off the game; 40 seconds of 5 minutes remained in the first encounter while in Guyana’s case, it was the first of 3 minutes.
