– Family suffers $$M in losses
Fire of unknown origin yesterday completely destroyed a two-storey wooden house at Lot 60 West Canefield, East Canje, Berbice.
Speaking to this newspaper, the 50-year-old owner, Tajepaul Jamuant, an employee of the Guysuco Rose Hall Estate, said at the time of the fire, which is reported to have begun around 08:00 hrs, he was not at home. He recounted that an hour earlier he had left for work at the Rose Hall Estate factory located about ½ mile away.
Jamuant said whilst at work he received a message that his house was on fire and he left work immediately. When he reached the scene, the house was already engulfed in flames, at the same time a truck from the New Amsterdam Fire service had just arrived to join the Land Rover from the Rose Hall Estate, which had arrived a few minutes earlier.
A distraught Jamuant said that he had lived at the premises his entire life and shares it with his 66-year-old mother Liela Jamuant, his wife Sandra Jamuant, his four children ranging in age from 15-27, his son in law and a three-year-old grand daughter.
The man said that his daughter, son-in-law and grand child who reside in the USA were scheduled to return to their home last evening and had already packed their suitcases. Everything was destroyed in the fire, including their passports and other important documents.
He said that the family was only able to save a fridge and what they had on their backs. They lost every thing in the inferno, which lasted a little less that an hour. Jamuant estimated his loss at over 12 million dollars as the house was fully furnished and they had recently done some renovation on the structure.
He also revealed that a considerable amount of money was on the premises as he was supposed to begin extension on the building this week. According to the man, a significant amount of jewelry was also destroyed.
