Following Guyana’s hard fought and well executed 1-0 win over old rivals Suriname on Wednesday evening at the Andre Kamperveen Stadion, Paramaribo, Head Coach of the ‘Golden Jaguars’ Wayne ‘Wiggy’ Dover was quick to compliment the team for a job well done.
Dover noted that what makes the result even sweeter is that the team is an inexperienced one and psychologically they had to erase the memory of losing all three games in the Parbo Bier Cup played at the same venue a few months ago to Antigua & Barbuda, French Guiana and Suriname.
He noted that their discipline, commitment and determination backed up by the hard working technical staff and good leadership of Captain Howard Lowe produced a memorable victory.
“As I told the guys before, once we keep organized we can win easily and they stuck to the plan, frustrating them {Suriname} for lengthy periods and we have reaped the rewards.”
Commenting on striker Devon Millington’s Golden goal for the ‘Golden Jaguars’, Dover stated that the BK International Western Tigers player has always been an exceptional player and he has led with aplomb in the absence of the likes of Gregory ‘Jackie Chan’ Richardson, Nigel ‘Powers’ Codrington and the Anthony ‘Awo’ Abrams.
“It just shows that he is right there with them but it’s just for him to demonstrate much more discipline and get his game back on track. I followed him in the just concluded Mackeson Futsal tournament where he was voted MVP and was also the highest goal scorer where it shows that this kid is talented.”
The elated Dover noted that the captaincy of his skipper Howard Lowe was remarkable and he is very happy that he was back on board.
“I am very happy that Lowe is back, he has led from the front and demonstrated his ability and capacity in taking the youngsters forward to success.”
Commenting on the plans for the other games, Dover stated that they will review Wednesday night’s game against Suriname but does not feel that there will be any major changes to their plan.
“We’ll see what the Netherlands has to offer early on before taking it to them as the game progresses.”
Dover, now based at Caledonia AIA in Trinidad & Tobago said he wanted the fans and supporters back home to know that the Jaguars are roaring once again and they are having fun in the jungle.
He stated in no uncertain terms that he really respects the initiative of the Guyana Football Federation for investing in exposing and building a young cadre of players with the future of the country in mind.
“I want to thank the GFF for giving me this opportunity to come back into this programme to help and make it work. I think there is a lot more to be done and we will make the nation proud.”
