Athletes, two officials leave Guyana today
By Edison Jefford
The Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) has named five athletes and two officials for the Second Stage of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) South American 10km Road Race in Suriname on Saturday. Senior Vice-President of the AAG, Cornel Rose told Kaieteur Sport yesterday that he met with officials from the association on Tuesday to select the team that is expected to leave Guyana today via airplane for neighbouring Suriname.
The five athletes that were selected on the national team include Cleveland Forde, Lionel D’Andrade, Dennis Horatio, Jevina Straker and Alika Morgan while Faye Naughton will accompany them as Manager and Robert Chisholm Coach.
Ashanti Scott, the second highest ranked Guyanese female to finish in the first stage here, had to decline national selection following the death of her mother, who is expected to be buried the same day of the race in Suriname, Saturday.
“We selected the athletes and we intended to pay for them to and from Suriname. Anyone else who goes is not part of the official AAG touring party, but we have not stopped them, we have given them the necessary sanctions,” Rose said.
Forde and another athlete were sponsored outside the athletics association. Forde told this newspaper that he was offered a two way ticket from his sponsor, Spads Inc. but he wants to be out of Suriname as soon as possible. The male winner of the first stage in Guyana on Sunday will fly into Suriname with them tomorrow but will return overland through the trail because of his commitment to school. He said that is exclusively his decision and not the sponsor.
However, Rose indicated that the athletics association never told the national athletes that they had seek their own sponsorship. “They are representing us, they are our athletes and we would have paid for them to go,” Rose pointed out.
The usual quota from Suriname was a male and female athlete along with an official, but AAG President, Colin Boyce had told this newspaper that providing funds were available Guyana would attempt to send a larger contingent.
Boyce had stated that the next best finishers apart from Forde and Morgan will be looked at in that regard, which is what was followed when the AAG met on Tuesday. Forde and the other sponsored athlete opened the floodgates.
