D’Andrade, Scott should squeeze in
TIMELY INTERVENTION!!! A representative of Spads Inc., Pauline Stevenson (right) hands over an airline ticket to Cleveland Forde in the presence of Simone Baburam in a timely gesture that will ensure that the athlete competes at the Second Stage of the SA 10km in Suriname on Saturday.
Spads Inc. has sponsored a one-way airline ticket for Cleveland Forde, which should help the country’s leading distance athlete compete at the Second Stage of the South American (SA) 10km Road Race in Suriname on Saturday.
“It’s (the sponsorship) is a good gesture for me. Possibly yeah they (the AAG) can handle someone else because I saw them complaining about not having enough but I don’t know because that’s up to them,” Forde told Kaieteur Sport.
The sponsorship of Forde should clear the way for either Lionel D’Andrade or Ashanti Scott, who were both earmarked for national selection and whose status as it relates to funding was unknown up to press time yesterday.
Forde, Morgan along with an official were the automatic Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) choices. President of the AAG, Colin Boyce had indicated to this newspaper that that was what Suriname sent in their equation.
However, the AAG President believed that the next two best local finishers from the First Stage here on Sunday, who were D’Andrade and Scott, should also be touted for national selection, but subject to the availability of funds.
Spads Inc, the company that is well-known for its water supply and filtration systems, has somewhat cleared the way for the AAG to accommodate another athlete with the funding of Forde, since they have eradicated those expenses.
“Boyce called me today (yesterday) and asked if I was fine. He said something about the association’s responsibility but I really hope that that (his sponsorship) would clear a way for anther athlete,” he continued yesterday afternoon.
Forde informed that because of his schedule with classes, he wants to move between here and Suriname with expediency.
“The faster I go in and out of Suriname is better for me,” the top distance runner said about flying into Suriname.
