Region Six – East Berbice/Corentyne has stepped up its drive to rid the area of all illegal and rundown structures, particularly those on the government reserves.
According to a source, the programme began two months ago. So far a number of persons have complied with the orders of notices served by the relevant agencies. On the other hand there were those who did not and their structures are to be torn down.
At Number Seventy-eight Village there is a particular location which is used for illegal activities and this has raised some concerns.
A number of persons were said to have been robbed and even molested. This is one such that would be pulled down. Also under this initiative, all sign boards are be removed with the exception of those belonging to Churches, Mosques, Temples, and schools, road signs and those nearing the names of villages, and the like.
At present, the Regional Administration is clearing the parapets along the Number Nineteen Highway. The indiscriminate dumping of refuse by both business concerns and residents, in some locations including sections of New Amsterdam, is also under scrutiny. The Administration is to soon put watchdogs in place and once caught the culprits would face the full force of the law.
