They say that miracles don’t happen nowadays, but yesterday two students of Winfer Gardens Primary School are evidence to the contrary.
The two students, Olivia English, 10, and 11-year old Onisha Caine, were run over by an 18-wheeler container truck while standing at the corner of Camp and Church Streets yesterday afternoon.
Miraculously, x-rays showed that they both survived without any serious injuries although Caine was crying out for pains in her head.
According to eyewitnesses, it was the presence of mind displayed by the 10-year-old Olivia English that saved the day for them.
This newspaper was told that the two children were standing on Church Street at the junction with Camp Street, waiting to cross the road around 17:00 hours.
One eyewitness said that the truck was proceeding south along Camp Street and attempted to turn unto Church Street.
The eyewitness stated that the driver of the truck did not negotiate the turn well and his rear wheel came into the path of the two children who desperately tried to get out of the way.
English told this newspaper that she saw the truck turning the corner and tried to get out of the way.
She said that she pulled her friend but could not get further out of the way since they would have ended up in the nearby drain.
“He turn de corner wild,” the 10-year old told Kaieteur News.
She said that she managed to pull her friend down under the truck and allowed it to pass over them while screaming at the top of her voice.
“He turn into de girls and dem deh under de wheel. De driver didn’t even look fuh stop,” said an eyewitness.
The eyewitness, Darell Meredith, said that he ran across the road and pulled the girls up as the truck continued along its way.
They were taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital by a female police rank who was near the scene at that time.
According to the eyewitness had it not been for the quick thinking of English, both girls would have been crushed by the huge rear wheels.
While English appeared to be okay for now, her colleague, Onisha Caine remained speechless even hours the incident.
Their parents were informed and rushed to the hospital to ascertain their wellbeing.
Most of the eyewitnesses to the incident said silent prayers, thanking the Almighty for the miracle.
They lamented the use of a number of city roads by huge container trucks especially during the peak traffic hours.
The driver of the truck was taken into police custody.
