accused wife beater may walk free
A post mortem examination was performed yesterday on the body of Dionne Mathias also known as Dionne Skeete and the cause of death was given as a brain tumour according to Government Pathologist Dr. Nehaul Singh.
The woman died last Saturday and it was alleged by relatives and neighbours that the woman was constantly abused by her jealous husband Mark Mathias.
According to the relatives of the dead woman, on the night prior to the woman’s death she and her husband were imbibing at a night spot not far from their home and it was on their way home that they had problems.
They further stated that the last beating which happened the same night, stemmed from her urinating in the open since she could not make it home to relieve herself.
A neighbour said that the woman was kicked down a flight of stairs on the night that she and her husband had the fight.
Subsequent to the woman’s death Mark Mathias was taken into custody and the police at that time indicated that they were investigating a possible murder.
The man’s family was adamant that he did not abuse his wife and they had mere quarrels like any other couple.
The accused relatives said that the woman’s headaches started after a rotting step collapsed under her weight, and that the accused was not the one responsible for her head injuries.
In an earlier interview the family members had indicated that the post mortem will prove that the allegations made against the accused will be just that, mere allegations, and not fact.
The family had even stated that the man will be vindicated upon the completion of the post mortem and it appears as if he will indeed walk away without charges.
The woman leaves to mourn her five children and she will be buried on Sunday at the Enmore burial ground.
