The test result from the fuel found in the possession of the three army ranks on Sunday last has shown that fuel is indeed illegal fuel.
This newspaper has been told that this may not have been the first time the ranks have transported smuggled fuel for a well known individual who operates in Morawhanna.
Reports are that the police have since received a call name for the individual in Morawhanna and efforts are being made to contact the person. Sources say that this is the third time the ranks transported smuggled fuel but it may have been their first trip to Parika. Up to press time yesterday the ranks—a Captain, a Lance Corporal and a Private were still in police custody as police continue their investigation.
On Sunday last the ranks were arrested at Parika after they were seen in Leguan asking for directions.
Persons associated that the ranks had left their Morawhanna location to conduct business at Parika.
But they had indicated that the business had to do with the sale of chicken in the Northwest District. This newspaper has since been advised that the four barrels of fuel which the ranks were caught with is more than sufficient for a return trip from Morawhanna.
The three Coast Guard ranks had made an unauthorised trip from the GDF Coast Guard Base at Morawahanna in Region One, and were in possession of three and one-half drums of fuel, four cellular phones, one GPS device, and $116,000.
The officer was in possession of his service pistol and five rounds of matching ammunition.
According to a statement from the GDF, the ranks aroused the suspicion of the police after they reportedly were asking for directions to Parika while on the Essequibo River. Residents alerted the police and the ranks were detained.
At the time, the men were traveling in a wooden boat owned by a Better Hope, East Coast Demerara resident who operates a boat service from Charity to the North West District.
