A swashbuckling unbeaten knock of 27 by West Indian player Sulieman Benn, supported by sensible bowling from Akeem Dewar (8-1-3-25), propelled Barbados to a 3 wickets victory over the TCL Group West Indies U-19 team when play in the WICB President’s Cup Cricket Championship commenced at the Bourda sward yesterday morning. Dewar was subsequently adjudged the Man of The Match.
The WI U-19 batted first and posted 172-6 but in the end the total proved woefully inadequate. At one stage the U-19 team seemed to be in control, taking wickets at regular intervals after the Bajans were progressing favourably at 102-4.
They then lost their way a bit, losing regular wickets and from 112-5 the Bajans were reduced to 127-7 after losing Kirk Edwards, caught by wicketkeeper, Shane Dorrish off the bowling of Yannick Charriah and Dwayne Smith who after lashing Akeem Dewar for a maximum score, fell 2 balls later, caught behind the stumps.
Jermaine Blackwood then snared Carlo Maurice for 23 (1×4, 2×6) to lift the U-19 hopes of an early victory. Benn then strolled in and attacked the bowling with venom. He, along with Kemar
Roach, who ended unbeaten on 7, then steered the Bajans to their target. Benn’s knock was decorated with one four and two lofty sixes, the final one sealing the issue in Barbados’ favour.
Despite Benn’s magnificent knock, it was Akeem Dewar who copped the man-of-the-match prize after bowling 8 overs and taking 3 wickets for a miserly 25 runs. Dwayne Smith was the next best bowler for Barbados with figures of 8-0-2-27.
Earlier, heavy rains at around 10:00hrs delayed the match and when play was eventually possible the umpires decided to shave off 20 overs from the match.
The WI U-19 took first strike and amassed 172-6 when their overs expired.
Evin Lewis top scored with a magnificent knock of 53 (7×4) before he was run out by Kemar Roach.
Kraigg Braithwaite supported with 48 before he was caught, while Yannick Ottley contributed an unbeaten, stroke filled, 35. Kejel Tyson was the only other batsman to reach double figures (14) but he was eventually adjudged LBW off the bowling of Hinds. At the end of their innings the U-19 team knew that the total was inadequate.
A spirited effort by their seamers midway in the innings restored some measure of hope.
Sulieman Benn strolled in when his team needed a shot in the arm. He delivered the goods and burst the U-19’s bubble.
The Bajans return for their second match against Guyana at the Albion Ground, tomorrow morning.
