John Steele, 54, of Ice Road, Timehri was yesterday crushed to death while on the job at John Fernandes wharf, Water Street, about 14:15 hours.
Steele, described as a jovial person, was welding when a wall of a bond packed with rice collapsed on him.
Eyewitnesses said that he was welding a trailer nearby at the time in the vicinity of the bond and he was crushed.
Two weeks ago Steele buried his father in Berbice and mere minutes before he was crushed his workmates recalled that he was joking with them. John Fernandes management reported that they summoned the police and the man was rushed to the St Joseph Mercy Hospital. There hospital sources said that “he was pronounced dead on arrival.”
