Police have detained the father-in-law, a brother-in law and a close male friend of former Region Three Vice Chairman, Ramnauth Bisram, who was found knifed to death in his Canal Number Two home on Monday.
The in-laws were reportedly taken into custody yesterday, while the friend, who also resides in Canal Number Two, was reportedly held on Monday night.
Kaieteur News understands that Bisram’s body was found by one of the detained in-laws, but it is unclear why police have taken them into custody.
Investigators appear to suspect that the 55-year -old man was slain by persons who knew him well.
The victim’s wife, Pamela Bisram and his daughter, Nalini Sinj flew in from the United States early yesterday morning having received the news of his death the previous day.
Both women expressed the view that the murder was carefully planned and that the killers were no ordinary robbers. According to the man’s daughter, whoever killed her father made off with his briefcase which contained a lot of important documents and a large amount of cash.
“He always kept a large amount of jewellery in the briefcase, along with US$5,000. his licenced firearm, the transport for the house and land…
Most importantly he had a death threat letter he received from a man some time back,” Sinj related.
The woman added that she never knew why the man had threatened her father but he always kept the letter.
Meanwhile, this newspaper was told that a bullet was removed from the crime scene but it does not match the caliber of weapon which Bisram was licenced to carry.
Investigators are also working on the theory that the killer(s) had a specific interest in the contents of the briefcase.
Kaieteur News was told that the killer(s) appeared to have tampered with the crime scene. According to the sources, the knife found near Bisram’s body appeared to have been wiped clean. In addition, detectives reportedly also found evidence suggesting that the perpetrators washed themselves off in Bisram’s bathroom.
Mrs. Bisram told Kaieteur News that she had only left Guyana in July to visit their four children and six grandchildren, but her husband opted to stay since he was not a fan of the winter season.
According to the man’s daughter, around 18:00 hours on Tuesday her father’s best friend called to inform her of his death.
“He called and he said ‘de old man dead’, I was in a state of shock but he didn’t say how my father died, I thought he had a heart attack…It was one hour after my other sister called back and then we found out he was murdered,” Sinj said.
She added that she and her mother then booked the next flight back to Guyana.
Bisram, 55, of 11 Canal Number Two, North Section, was found lying in a pool of blood in one of his bedrooms shortly after 16:00 hrs.
A relative who found the corpse said that a knife, suspected to be the murder weapon, was lying near the body.
The relative had entered the house after seeing the door open but wasn’t getting any response from Bisram.
According to the relative, two gold rings were missing from the victim’s hand and a suitcase in the bedroom appeared to have been ransacked.
Meanwhile police were yesterday still questioning a young woman in connection with the murder of an elderly Brazilian, whose bound body was discovered with stab wounds in a Robb Street apartment on Monday.
The dead man was only known as Joao and was described as a quiet handyman who has been living in Guyana for the past seven years.
Police said that his body bore three stab wounds to his chest and one each to his right side rib and hip.
His hands were tied and his face was covered with a bag that was taped up.
