Emilita Romohan is a single mother of five. On Sunday October 9, last, she lost all her earthly belongings in a fire in her modest apartment at Grove, East Bank Demerara.
Since then she and her one-year-old baby has been seeking refuge at the home of a friend.
Her other children whose ages range between four and 12-years old have been scattered in different homes.
Romohan desperately wants to be reunited with her children but in the meantime she is in dire need of assistance.
On that fateful day in October, Romohan was cooking when she heard the neighbours raising an alarm.
Although the apartment building was saved, her domain was completely destroyed.
As a result her children have not been able to attend school for the lack of clothing and other school items.
“I cannot leave them at people all the time. Two here, two there. People want me to collect them,” she lamented.
Romohan, whose husband died a year ago, has had her fair share of troubles trying to acquire help from government agencies.
She related that she had approached the Guyana Relief Council but was informed that another person using her name had collected items already.
She believes that her sister who is also a single parent was the culprit.
“They (relief council) told me that they will investigate,” she told this newspaper.
She has also been promised a sum of money by the ministry of human services but that has not yet materialized.
“My friend is trying but we cannot pressure her to find food for us everyday,” Romohan said.
The part time domestic is desperate for some form of assistance and would appreciate if someone one could give her a job.
She can be reached on telephone number 685-4523.
