A John Fernandes employee, who is a die hard supporter of the Pele Football Club, was remanded to prison yesterday after he allegedly stabbed two guys at a football match.
Garfield Tyrell, 34, of 84 Dowding Street, Campbellville, who was not required to plead to the indictable charges, was refused bail yesterday by Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson.
He was read two counts of unlawful wounding.
It is alleged that on October 23, last, at the Tucville Ground in Georgetown the accused unlawfully and maliciously wounded, Ethan Cordis, so as to cause actual bodily harm.
It is also alleged that on the same night the accused unlawfully and maliciously wounded Hubert Gordon so as to cause him actual bodily harm.
The accused, who said nothing, was represented by Attorney at Law Mark Waldron, who, in his bail application, explained that the incident started at the Tucville ground where Pele Football Club was engaged in a match with Riddim Squad.
He further explained that his client is a great supporter of the Pele Football Club and that the incident actually started when some Riddim Squad supporters threw stuff on the accused.
“My client walked away close to the Pele area. He is very passionate and vocal in his support of Pele,” Waldron stated.
Waldron went on to state that after an exchange of words the complainants confronted the accused about his support of Pele and a scuffle started.
“My client also sustained injuries to his jaw and hand and had several teeth knocked out,” Waldron avowed.
In recalling the incident Police prosecutor Kevin London told the court that the matter erupted after Riddim Squad scored the first goal against Pele. This aggravated the accused and an argument broke out.
“The allegation is that the accused left the game and returned with a knife and started to fire stabs and chops at the Riddim Squad supporters with whom he argued,” London said.
Cordis received several stab wounds.
“While the accused stabbed Cordis, Gordon ran to his assistance and he in turn received stabs. Gordon ran away and was later cornered by the accused who dealt him several more stabs” London added.
Waldron added, “Two against one is a bank not a fight.”
He asked the magistrate that his client be released on his own recognizance since the police violated the law by keeping the accused in custody for over the 72-hour period that the law permits them to.
Prosecutor London went on to state that the accused never reported the matter to the police so therefore no charges could be issued to the complainants.
The magistrate remanded the accused. He is expected to return to court on November 3.
