Golden Jaguars Captain and long serving Guyana defender Howard Lowe has rejoined the national team following an amicable resolution to the requests he had made of the Guyana Football Federation for increased stipend and Insurance for the team.
Lowe did not depart on Monday morning with the team but linked up with his teammate’s yesterday afternoon ahead of this evening’s important clash with old rivals Suriname in the feature game of a double header to kick off one month of activities to mark Suriname’s 34th Independence. The actual date of their Independence is November 25.
This evening’s opening match at 19:00hrs Suriname time; 18:00hrs Guyana time will bring together the other two countries competing for top honours in the round-robin tournament, French Guiana and the Netherlands Antilles.
The Guyanese players had two sessions yesterday (morning/afternoon) as they fine tuned for what is expected to be a keen contest. The Surinamese triumphed over the lads from the Land of Many Waters in their last game which was contested in the Parbo Bier Cup a few months ago but the ‘Golden Jaguars’ are eager to reverse that decision.
Head Coach Wayne ‘Wiggy’ Dover told Kaieteur Sport that his charges have worked hard in the time that they have been together and he is satisfied that they are aware of the job at hand and what is required to come out as victors.
“I am very confident that we can pull off a victory against Suriname.”
Commenting on Lowe’s return to the team, Dover said, “I am very elated to have Lowe back with us, we all know what he brings to this young team in terms of experience and leadership. The players also are very thrilled to have him back at the helm.”
“I had a chat with the players to let them know of the situation and once that would have been resolved, Lowe would have been back and retain his position as captain, and they were all very understanding.”
This evening’s starting X1 comes from Ronson Williams in goal, Howard Lowe, Kelvin Smith, Brion Baker and Colin Nelson in defence. Controlling midfield will be Dirk Archer, Travis ‘Zorro’ Grant, Dwain Jacobs and Warren Gilkes with Devon Millington and Marvin Joseph hunting goals upfront.
In keeping with the Guyana Football Federation’s aim of exposing younger players, Dover said that every player on tour will be given the chance to show their talent and help their country to win.
He also commented on the addition of two new players from North America, goalkeeper Roland Dey and midfielder, Jamal Breedy. “I think the effort that Roland Dey has given by making himself available and working hard during training is very commendable. He is a decent player who has lots of room for improvement and a long way to go in the sport. Breedy has definitely shown that he can compete with anyone of the local based players for a spot in the starting team and he too, has a lot to offer our football.”
Dover was quick to point out that with Suriname being their first challenge he opted to expose the home based players for such a tough encounter.
“Playing against Suriname, supposedly the strongest team of the tournament, we had to field our best possible team.”
This is the inaugural Suriname Independence Competition and according to Tournament Manager, Aniel Ghisaidoobe, they are aiming for it to be an annual event which will compliment the already existing Parbo Bier Cup and the Club Tournament which are organized and run by the Foundation for International Football, a four member team.
Ghisaidoobe, who is also the President of the Junior Chamber International of Suriname noted that they have already started to plan for next year’s competition even though this inaugural tournament has not yet commenced.
“We want to make this particular competition a big one and so we are going to leave no stones unturned to achieve this. The Foundation for International Football is a very experienced group of dynamic persons and we want to ensure that the way we do things is impressive and dynamic.”
Guyana will face the Netherlands Antilles in the first game on Friday with Suriname taking on French Guiana in the main event. The curtain raiser on Sunday features the Golden Jaguars and French Guiana with the final tournament game between the host nation and the Netherlands.
