WICB, L&L, NCN ensure Radio coverage available
The President’s Cup Regional One-Day cricket tournament starts today with four first round matches and the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB), Barbados based company Line & Length Inc and the National Communications Network of Guyana have joined forces to ensure live radio coverage of all of the matches is available.

Speaking at yesterday’s press conference at the Princess Buddy’s Hotel at Providence to launch this year’s competition, L&L’s CEO Barry Wilkinson told the gathering, which included former West Indies Captains Clive Lloyd and Ramnaresh Sarwan, that it was a challenge to broadcast 3 matches per day last year but informed that L&L, who has the broadcast rights for the competition, had a very successful debut outing broadcasting the regional tournament.
“This year is bigger and we expect it to be better with all of the top players available. We will have some of the Region’s top commentators working along with those from Guyana as we continue to provide extensive coverage of West Indies cricket while at the same time exposing the talent of the local commentators,” Wilkinson said.
Caribbean’s leading radio commentators Andrew Mason and Fazeer Mohamed will be in Guyana for the 15 matches and Wilkinson informed that 13 Stations around the Region will be taking the ‘feed’ with radio stations from the various countries taking the matches involving their team. All the stations will carry the broadcast for the semis and final.
NCN will mount a team to cover the Guyana matches, while L&L with assistance from NCN’s John Ramsingh, putting together commentary teams for the other 3 matches per day.
L&L will broadcast the semi-finals and final and NCN along with the other stations in the region will carry that ‘feed’ live. Wilkinson informed that the WICB has subsidized the cost of producing the cricket for radio so that stations can access the ‘feed’ free in an effort to provide as much listeners across the Caribbean the opportunity to follow the competition on radio.
Wilkinson will be the Producer for one of the commentary teams while Sean Devers, John Ramsingh and Inderjeet Persaud are the other Producers. Curtly Ambrose and Roger Harper are among the former players who will work as comments personalities while Guyana-born Trinidadian Bridge Parasnauth is also a part of the broadcast team.
GCB’s Marketing Manager Ramsay Ali said that everything is in place to host the event and disclosed that each match will cost US$17,000 to run off with advertisements being increased for the semi-finals and final which will be played under lights at the Stadium on November 2, 3 & 5.
“Guyana will once again host the competition because of the lower cost of running off regional tournaments here and all of the venues are fully prepared. We had some concerns with Albion and Enmore but everything is now ready to successfully host games,” Ali explained.
Ali said that while the GCB will spend a significant time in marketing the semis and finals, the plan is to concentrate on promoting key games each day and mostly those involving Guyana instead of trying to sell all of the games to the public.
Ali admitted that very little funds is allocated for advertisement and said that he felt that even if you spend a huge sum of money, some matches will ‘just not attract a crowd’ and he understood that a lack of better work by the WICB’s Marketing committee resulted in the Board being unable to find a sponsor for the competition again this year.
Foam, Carib Beer and Giftland Office Max are the premier sponsors while several smaller sponsors like Sterling products Limited and Leisure Inn and Car Rental have chipped in to make the broadcast possible.
Guyana play the Leewards at Enmore today and Barbados at Albion on Friday and Ali hopes to see massive crowds at these matches while the Jamaica/ T&T game at the Stadium today is also a big match.
Wilkinson apologized for the absence of new WICB CEO Earnest Hillarie due to flight problems from Antigua and Captain of defending champions Trinidad and Tobago Daren Ganga who was expected in Guyana last evening with some other members of his team.
Many present including Harper and broadcaster Alan LaRose felt that more promotion of the competition should be done by the GCB while schools should be approached to get students to the ground to create an ‘atmosphere’ for the players.
