GAWU proposes 10 per cent wage increase

The Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) and the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers’ Union (GAWU) were involved in two sessions of discussion yesterday in their wages and salaries negotiation conciliation meeting.
President of GAWU, Komal Chand, told Kaieteur News last evening that GAWU has proposed that GuySuCo increase the salaries of sugar workers by 10 percent.  However, at the conciliation meeting yesterday under the chairmanship of Chief Labour Officer, Yogannand Persaud, GuySuCo  refused the offer, citing the company’s financial status.
This has now pushed the negotiation to Thursday, where Chand is hoping that some comprise can be met, since the meeting has been going on for far too long.
According to Chand, GAWU decided to adjust its offer to 10 per cent, down from 15 per cent, in light of GuySuCo’s financial situation and the state of the sugar industry generally.
Additionally, Chand expressed his concern that GuySuCo does not invest in the workers.
“GuySuCo needs to invest in its workers if they are going to achieve their objectives in the company’s turnaround plan,” Chand said.
Yesterday, the Chief Labour Officer received explanations from GuySuCo’s financial director for explanations as to why the sugar company cannot go higher than three percent.
Over the past few months, GuySuCo has made it known that it is in no position to give workers an increase, given the financial situation the world is faced with.
Earlier in the year the union had stated that it was looking for a 15 percent increase given the growing inflation rate over recent years.
The two parties had been at odds over the past few weeks over wages increase.
Recently, GuySuCo pulled out of talks but later said that it was willing to go back to the table once the union was willing to do so.
Sugar workers at the various estates had taken industrial action over several other issues that are also currently under discussion. These include the transfer of workers from the Diamond Estate to the LBI estate.
