Funds availability to determine D’Andrade, Scott’s fate
By Edison Jefford
Cleveland Forde and Alika Morgan are the automatic choices of the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) to represent the country at this weekend’s South American 10km Road Race Second Stage in Suriname after their performances.
President of the AAG, Colin Boyce told Kaieteur Sport yesterday that Forde and Morgan are definite selections for Suriname while Lionel D’Andrade and Ashanti Scott’s national selection is based on the availability of funds.
“Suriname wants a male, a female and an official but we are looking at sending our other two best finishers from the race here, which would be D’Andrade and Scott. However, that is based on the availability of funds,” Boyce said
The AAG President, who is currently encamped for a Junior Officers’ Course, stated that a decision on whether D’Andrade and Scott will travel as part of the national contingent was likely at an AAG meeting scheduled for yesterday.
“We are waiting on the costing on how much people we can afford to send. If it is likely that we can send the four athletes, we will send them, but if not, they have to compete on their own in Suriname,” Boyce informed.
Previously athletes had gone to Suriname to run in the Second Stage independently and it is likely that those athletes who will fall outside national selection will do the same this weekend for the IAAF-sanctioned event in Suriname.
Forde won the International Male race here for the third consecutive time that established his place among the Caribbean’s elite distance runners after also winning the CARICOM 10km race and Antiguan Prime Minister’s 10k race.
D’Andrade placed fourth in the event behind Brazilian Eliesio Da Silva and Trinidad and Tobago’s, Richard Jones. He has also had decent performances in the Caribbean since he took up residence in Trinidad.
Morgan finished second in the Women’s International race of the first stage of SA 10k as she won the Antiguan PM race following her astonishing return to form after recovering from a career-threatening injury earlier this year.
Scott returned to competitive running when she dominated the distance events at the Joint Service Track and Field Competition earlier this month. She will no doubt give Morgan the support needed at the Second Stage in Suriname.
