It was skills, thrills and spills when the Rising Sun Rodeo Committee held a successful one day Rodeo at the Rising Sun Turf Club, Arima Park West Coast Berbice last Sunday.
It was a day filled with fun as many spectators were left in awe at the displays on offer.
The event had its fair share of spills and thrills as the Vaqueros displayed their ability in some daring and breathtaking sequences with some gyrating on the backs of their mounts to the pulsating music of the Rhythm Stars International sounds systems.
The day’s event saw the local West Coast Posse lead by the indomitable Fazal Habibullah holding their own against their more illustrious counterparts from the interior, Brazil and Venezuela.
The competition this year was more intense as more cowboys came out to strut their stuff. The competition was so keen that no one was crowned Rodeo King because none of the Vaqueros were able to come out tops in more than one event.
Nine Events were run off and in the end the various winners were: Wild Cow Milking saw the combination of Orin Peters and Ramjohn Azeeze collecting the most milk in the time stipulated, more than second place Jermaine Thomas and Trevor Ramzee as Damien Alsides and Richard Peters settled for third.
Wild cow milking saw the participants (a pair) had to rope, restrain and milk the animal within a period of two minutes. The participant with the most milk won.
The Calf roping event saw Ronald Ross winning from Clive Ross and Keino Hardcourt.
The Calf roping competition saw the Vaquero on horse back being required, to rope a calf around the neck dismount the horse, secure three feet of the calf by tying it, stand and raise their hand in the air to indicate that they are done, the persons with the fastest time won.
Steer Roping winner was Damien Alsides from ‘May May’ Anderson and Paul Simon.
Steer roping, which was similar to the Calf roping, was also a crowd pleaser. Many riders were displaced by the raging animals and some patrons escaped serious injuries as the wild animals charged into fences forcing the spectators, who had perched to get a better view, to beat a hasty retreat.
In the Bare Back Bronco event; Keino Hardcourt got the better of Richard Peters and Vander Peters.
Bull Riding saw Paul Simon winning from Clive Winter and Vicky Ramnarine.
The Saddle Bronco event was taken by Odo Peters ahead of Richard Peters and Carl Davis third.
The Bare Back and Saddle Bronco riding along with the Bull riding are similar in which the participant with one hand raised above the head has to ride the animal for a given time.
One of the main attractions on the day’s card was the display of the female vaqueros who vied for the rodeo Queen title. In the end Ranyela Nacimento came out on top ahead of Elizabeth Robertson, Ayala Kenyon and Abigail Johnson.
Abigail Johnson however as the lone female who chance the Bare Back Bronco ride and thus was rewarded for her bravery as she took and acrobatic fall in the process.
