Basketball extravaganza touts flair and fun
By Edison Jefford
Flair and fun were the catch-words yesterday when the Beepat Scorpions Basketball Club launched their Seventh Annual All-Star Weekend Extravaganza scheduled for November 7-8 at the sport’s Mecca, the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
The Club’s First Vice-President, Warren Williams told the media yesterday that the event promises to be “bigger and better for more than one reason” that includes responses from major sponsors, who are in full support of the occasion.
Williams said the fact that major sponsors have given them support implies that they have a quality product that is bound to succeed. Some of the sponsorship heavyweights include Digicel, Brunswick Sardine, Ansa McAl and Giftland.
Sponsorship Executive for Digicel Guyana, Sherwin Campbell said that the company will be looking forward to an entertaining weekend of basketball and patrons should expect some Digicel Promotions during the two-day event.
“We look forward to this year’s [Basketball] All-Star Weekend; this is the moulding of the next generation of sportsmen in Guyana. We look forward to this event,” he reiterated in the office of the Sports Hall yesterday afternoon.
The Showtime basketball occasion has dropped the ‘Supligen’ Brand name for this year’s extravaganza that will include the senior three-point shootout, senior dunk-out and Junior All-Star game on the opening Saturday night.
The following night features the junior three-point shootout, junior dunk-out and Senior’s All-Star game. The games will showcase the best talents in Linden and Georgetown with local music artists performing at each halftime break.
Alicia Badu, who represented Beepat’s under the Brunswick Sardine label, said that it was a pleasure being part of the All-Stars this year. “This is a good brand [Brunswick]. We wish you all good games,” Badu expressed briefly.
Apart from the official activities to mark the All-Star Weekend, crowd incentives is to be a major part of both nights. These novel events include the ‘hot shot’ with two others that will be revealed simultaneously with the Trinidadians.
The media was told that the amount of Trinidad and Tobago basketball players expected for the competition will be known by Friday. Meanwhile, Ansa McAl managed to broker an exclusive sponsorship deal with the event.
Marketing Assistant, Anjeta Hinds said that the Tropical Rhythm juice brand will be the official sponsorship brand because of its relevance to athletes and health. Hinds indicated that sportsmen and women cling to the beverage.
“They (Beepat Scorpions) came to us and we said yes because we are always happy to be supporting sportsmen and women,” Hinds noted. The event will not carry a brand name except the Beepat Scorpions Seventh Annual All-Star Weekend.
