Even as he engages the country’s best chess players in the current national championships at the Ocean Spray Hotel, Stanley Place Kitty, Wendell Meusa sent out some ominous signals when he convincingly captured the honours in the Guyana Chess Federation organized, Rapid Chess tournament last Sunday at the YMCA, Thomas Lands.
Nurturing deep ambitions of attaining grandmaster status, Muesa scored eight points of nine to relegate Learie Webster, with 7 1/2 points, to the second place. President of the Chess Federation, Errol Tiwari rose from his recent poor showing to seal off the podium positions after amassing six points. Muesa was also among Tiwari’s victims.
Webster must have felt pleased with his second place standings especially since the podium spots have been so elusive in the recent past. His final tally was 7 points after conceding a game to Muesa and a draw to newcomer, Charles Nunes.
The other points standing are Omar Shariff, David Khan and Shiv Nandalall 5 1/2 points apiece. Charles Nunes, Haatram Parbat and Alex Joseph 4 1/2 points apiece.
While Muesa dominated the seniors, it was Saeed Ali who walked away with the honours in the junior category after scoring five points. This player had taken a self imposed hiatus from the sport to concentrate on his grade six exams.
Cecil Cox also scored 5 points but had to be content with the second place. Kana Khan and Rashad Hussain both scored four points apiece while William Holder scored 3 1/2 points. Sham Khan finished on three points while Sheriffa Ali finished in the cellar on two and a half points.
The tournament was sponsored by Jumbo Jet Auto Sales and Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.
