A man known to be a taxi driver was remanded to prison yesterday after he allegedly unlawfully confined a girl.
Orin Mathews, 29, of North Sophia, was refused bail yesterday when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson to answer the charge of unlawful confinement.
It is alleged that on October 20, the accused unlawfully confined Anastasia Chomakoon and prevented her from exiting his motorcar. Mathews pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Chomakoon claims that she only knew Mathews as a taxi driver of RT taxi service. However, police prosecutor, Kevin London, told the court that Chomakoon attends The Business School and on the day in question, Chomakoon went to the 40 bus park to catch a bus to go home but there was no bus.
“She took a taxi of which the accused was the driver and she told him she was going to Campbellville,” said London.
Chomakoon noticed that Mathews drove past where she was going and she inquired and the accused told her he was heading to Bel Air to pick up a parcel, the prosecutor added. They however passed Bel Air and she further inquired and he urged her to shut her mouth. Mathews reportedly drove through Liliendal and slowed down to go through the pot holes in the road.
Chomakoon told the police that she became frightened and jumped out of the vehicle, but Mathews snatched her trying to pull her back in the vehicle violently.
Chomakoon said that she got away and jumped in another taxi and told the driver about the incident. She went home and reported the matter to the police station.
“Later that night she identified the man to her cousin and her cousin confronted him. A scuffle broke out. A nearby police patrol intervened and arrested both men.
At the station the accused was informed about the allegation and was charged,” London added.
The magistrate refused to grant the accused bail. Mathews is expected to return to court on November 12.
