There are no immediate plans by Government to allow permanent businesses to operate along the access roads to the new Berbice River Bridge. However, there are mobile vendors.
Works Minister Robeson Benn said that a close watch is being kept on the situation around the D’Edward Village on the West Bank of Berbice and Crab Island, on the eastern bank to ensure no illegal structures go up.
Responding to questions on possible business structures around the new bridge, like those around the Stelling areas at Rosignol and New Amsterdam, Minister of Public Works, Robeson Benn, acknowledged that there may be a need for facilities along the roads to the toll booths located at either end of the bridge.
However, there are no immediate plans to go this route right now.
While a few residents of the area living along the access routes have started building shops and other facilities at their homes, there are no roadside shops or snackettes alongside the road reserves.
Benn acknowledged that there will be needs like washrooms and other facilities as lines would buildup when the bridge is open for river traffic.
However, he stressed, facilities like these have to be regulated and land will have to be acquired before any moves are made to open up any commercial activities and there are no immediate plans to do it right now.
He pointed out that the management of the Berbice River Bridge may see a need for a possible mall or food court.
The Stelling area on both sides of the Berbice River, around Rosignol and New Amsterdam, had provided a means of living for several persons over the years.
With the long wait for ferries or pontoons, before the Berbice River Bridge came late last year, there were many roadside snackettes and hangout bars that had become a weekend outing spot for many at the ferry Stelling.
However, these businesses are not allowed to operate the bridge area at D”Edward and Crab Island.
For many, the coming of the bridge has brought a closure of almost a cultural love affair with those two Stellings in Bernice.
