Campbell, Griffith, Carriah, Dowrich also impress
By Sean Devers
Andrew Creary and Kraigg Braithwaite were again among the runs as the 2nd practice match for the TCL Group West Indies under-19 team ended yesterday at the Police ground in a victory for Yannick Ottley’s X1 against Dalton Polius’ X1.
After a visit to the TCL Plant in Georgetown today, 14 players from the 20-man squad preparing for next year’s under-19 World Cup in New Zealand will be chosen for the teenagers’ opening game on Wednesday against Barbados at Bourda.
In sultry conditions on a slow track with assistance for the spinners, the exciting Creary, who made an unbeaten 91 on Sunday, hit 3 fours and 2 sixes in an unbeaten 50 as Polius’ X1 were bowled out for 183 off the final ball of their 40th over as Yannick Carriah took 4-30 with his spin.
Braithwaite followed up his 1st match 48 with a 56 and along with John Campbell (54) added 121 for the first wicket before they were both asked to retire out as Ottley’s team reached 184-5 in the 36th over.
Home boy Trevon Griffith smashed 5 fours and a six in a scintillating 54-ball 49 before he gifted his wicket with a scoop-sweep off spinner Jermaine Blackwood which lobbed for slip to run to behind the keeper to take the catch.
Nobody else expect guest player Andrew Lyght Jnr, who thumped 2 sixes in his 16, of the other batsmen passed 15 as Blackwood (3-27) and left-arm spinner Patrick Harty (2-32) supported Carriah.
Pacer Keyon Joseph removed Kejel Tyson (5) caught at square leg at 26-2 while Griffith and Evan Lewis (7) fell in quick succession to leave the score on 76-3. Akeem Dewar (10) was caught and bowled by Harty while Kirk Harris (13) Nicholson Gordon (0) both fell with the score on 143. Ten runs later Carriah had Nelson Boland (11) caught behind while Blackwood mopped up the tail.
Braithwaite, a former West Indies under-15 player, and Campbell batted solidly in their century partnership before they were both called in by the Coaches Andre Coley and Hubern Evans.
Braithwaite, who again batted responsibility, used his feet to hit a rare six off Harty and faced 76 balls for his 56 while Campbell’s 54 lasted 70 balls.
Left-arm spinner Jomal Warrican then removed Yahhnick Ottly (4) and Blackwood (0) while Carriah (8) was caught behind off Polius at 173-5.
Warrican finished with 2-34 in the young team’s final practice session before their opening round game.
The young side will forgo their scheduled 13:00hrs practice session today to get some rest and Coach Andrew Coley said the main reason for the practice session was get the guys accustomed the low and slow pitches in Guyana and learn to play as a team in match situations.
Wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich looked accomplished in his unbeaten 44 from 25 balls with 2 fours in his team’s final practice for its match against the Bajans.
The youth side will look to avenge the embarrassment of being bowled out for 18 in Berbice in the 2007 tournament when they face-off in their first round clash.
