Police are probing the murder of an elderly Brazilian whose bound body was discovered with multiple stab wounds in a Robb Street apartment yesterday afternoon.
Curious onlookers flock the hearse as the body of the dead Brazilian was being removed from the apartment.
The shocking discovery was made by a neighbour who went to check on the elderly man after not seeing him for all of yesterday.
The dead man was only known as Joao and was described as a quiet handyman who has been living in Guyana for the past seven years.
Police said that his body bore three stab wounds to his chest and one each to his right side rib and hip.
His hands were tied and his face was covered with a bag that was taped up.
Investigators have so far not established any motive for the killing, but the dead man’s countrymen who had flocked to the scene believe that is death was a result of a robbery although Joao was a man of modest means.
Joao was last seen early yesterday morning by a neighbour who is also a Brazilian.
She told the media that after not seeing the elderly man for the rest of the day she and another female friend decided to check on him since the door to his downstairs apartment was open, a situation they found strange.
The woman said that after entering the apartment she saw Joao’s body slumped in his bathroom.
“I thought that he was sick and fall down. So I run out and started screaming for help,” the woman told the media.
She said that she summoned a police vehicle with the aim of taking the man to the hospital for medical attention.
However, when the police checked they found the body lying in a pool of blood and a closer examination revealed the multiple stab wounds.
By then a crowd, among them several of Joao’s countrymen, had gathered outside the apartment trying to ascertain what may have led to his murder.
Although the murder occurred during the day, none of the neighbours reported hearing anything strange from Joao’s apartment.
Many of his countrymen described him as a quiet and friendly person who interfered with no one.
“He would normally stand outside and was very friendly with everyone,” a Brazilian who had known Joao for the past three years told reporters.
“Sometimes you don’t even know that he is in the apartment. He’s so quiet,” said another Brazilian who shares the apartment building with Joao.
Police have sealed off the apartment and have placed a guard to ensure that the scene is preserved for further investigations.
