After a prolonged absence from the sport, Anthony Harry made a resounding return, chalking up the New Building Society (NBS) sponsored 10K junior walk race around Soesdyke and was duly rewarded with the NBS trophy when the Cavalier Sports and Tour Club (CS&TC) staged that event on Saturday October 24 last.
The event which was staged in honour of the birth anniversary of the coordinator of the CS&TC, Olga Harry, witnessed Ivelaw Charles filling the second place slot while his sibling, Dan Charles sealed off the podium positions.
Malika Thomas walked away with the honours on the distaff side, ahead of Angela and Avinna Charles, who trudged in second and third, respectively.
David Harry dominated the U-10 category followed by Stephen Taylor with Daniel Charles finishing third.
The race walkers were subsequently presented with trophies donated by several corporate entities including the New Building Society, Giftland Office Max, DaSilva’s House of Optics and overseas based Guyanese, Donald Thomas.
Executive member of the CS&TC, Natasha Harry presented the prizes to the winners and urged them to use their leisure time wisely. She also reminded them that race walking provided the ideal platform for the attainment of physical, as well as mental health.
Meanwhile, next up on the CS&TC calendar is a 12 lap event for junior race walkers around Soesdyke on Sunday November 15 next. This activity would kick off the CS&TC tourism awareness month of activities and would be followed by a 10K open race walk around the National Park on Sunday November 15. Starting time is 06:30hrs. The walkers would compete for trophies and other prizes donated by corporate Guyana. (Michael Benjamin)
