Buxton, Milerock, GDF post wins, Liquid Gold & Sunburst Camptown draw 4-4
By Franklin Wilson
Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United is the only team certain to date of being in the final four of the Guyana Football Federation Super League, a pilot project being funded by the Win in CONCACAF with CONCACAF project initiated by the World Governing body for the sport, FIFA.
Alpha United took care of East Demerara’s Victoria Kings 2-0 in feature play at the GCC ground, compliments of goals either side of play by Howard Lowe in the 45th minute and Andrew Murray in the 80th.
The first game of this double header saw Liquid Gold of Bartica coming close to defeating Sunburst Camptown, but the Campbellville boys led by a Nigel ‘Powers’ Codrington double rebounded in style to earn an equal share of the spoils as the high octane encounter ended 4-4.
It took a face saving goal in the first minute of injury time by the veteran Troy ‘Bugs’ Prescod to earn Camptown the draw. The sea saw affair saw Camptown taking the lead in the 33rd minute with Codrington netting the first of his double.
It was an advantage that Camptown enjoyed until the 53rd minute when Liquid Gold drew level through a John Joseph goal. Two minutes later, Telson McKinnon’s goal handed Camptown the lead again but Liquid Gold responded in like manner in the 60th, this time through Ryan Andries.
The best of the game was yet to come as former National Whitney Welcome stood solid like fine Bartica gold to rock the nets with a double of his own within a five minute span, adding a new dimension to the exciting battle.
Welcome slapped goals past goalkeeper Richie Richards in the 73rd and 77th minute to the delight of his fellow teammates and supporters.
Camptown now, had to dig deep into their reservoir of experience at this critical juncture of the game. Codrington, who had endured a very lean spell with regard to scoring, has been gradually returning to form in the last few games.
Three minutes to full time he {Codrington} narrowed the advantage and Prescod nailed the equalizer in the first minute of injury time, the game ending in a nerve racking, but exciting draw.
Up at the Rosignol ground, the Guyana Defence Force through a Eusi Phillips 45th goal took full points from the home team Rosignol United.
In the evening at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground, it was the night of the ones. Buxton United took care of Bakewell Topp XX by the lone goal of their encounter which was scored by young defender Les Charles Critchlow who has been improving constantly.
Critchlow was on target in the 86th minute of a close encounter. It was not so in terms of the late goal in the
Milerock win over Sewall United. Ray Bob Semple sealed the deal in as early as the 3rd minute.
Alpha United sits at top of the table with 20 points and certain of a top four spot. The battle for the other three positions in the final four is way from being decided as a number of teams are still in with a chance.
GDF are on 13, Camptown 12, Milerock 10, Rosignol and Seawall 9, Buxton 8, Victoria Kings and Topp XX 7 each.
The competition will continue on Wednesday evening at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground with an all Linden match up. Topp XX will face Milerock with both teams aiming for full points. This match up will be preceded by a Female National league game between the home team and Georgetown.
