Nagamootoo, Christian, Jacobs left out
By Sean Devers
Wicketkeeper Delbert Hicks and leg-spinner Davendra Bishoo are the only players without Regional One-Day experienced selected on the Guyana 14-man squad for the Regional series which starts in Guyana on Wednesday. The squad was announced on Saturday night.
The left-handed Hicks, who played at the Regional youth level in 2002, made his First Class debut against Barbados at the Guyana National Stadium this year and scored 27 and 6 in his only match. He has been preferred to Derwin Christian who kept in last year’s regional One-Day tournament and whose place Hicks took this year in the First Class team.
Former West Indies leg-spinner, 34 year-old Mahendra Nagamootoo, who played at the Regional One-Day level last year and who participated in the GCB 20/20 cricket Festival, has been bypassed as the selectors opted for 23-year-old leg-spinner Davendra Bishoo in a side which has an inexperienced bowling attack.
Bishoo has played 12 First-Class matches since his debut last year but is yet to play a One-Day game and his inclusion is a surprise after Nagamootoo, the leading wicket taker in regional First-Class cricket was named in the 25-man training squad.
There is also no room for former West Indies captain Steven Jacobs who played in the First-Class team and in the 20/20 match last Friday and Saturday. While Jacobs’ off-spin bowling has improved over the last season, he has under achieved with the bat and he makes way for a third pacer in the squad.
With Esuan Crandon and All-rounder Chris Barnwell expected to share the new ball on the flat and low Guyana pitches, the selectors have also picked the hard working Essequibian First-Class pacer Trevon Garraway who has a solitary regional One-Day game under his belt. He took 0-30 from 3 overs against CCC on his One-Day debut last year.
Twenty-nine-year old National One-Day all-rounder Deon Ferrier, shockingly ignored by the Demerara selectors despite scoring a century and a 99 in the 2009 Guyana National One-Day competition, has also been picked in the 14-man squad which will be captained by former West Indies Skipper Ramnaresh Sarwan.
The side includes 4 batsmen who have played Test cricket this year along with Test player Narsingh Deonarine, who this year became the first batsmen to score 1,000 in regional First-Class cricket. Royston Crandon, who played his only ODI in South Africa in the Champions Trophy tournament, is also in the side.
Sewnarine Chattergoon, Dowlin, Sarwan, Deonarine and Shiv Chanderpaul (all Test players) could occupy the first 5 positions in the order
Crandon’s older brother Esuan, who represented the West Indies in the 2006 ‘Sixes’ competition in Hong Kong, former West Indies under-19 batsman Assad Fudadin and ex-West Indies under-19 left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul are also in the side which will be coached by former Guyana batsman Rabindranauth Seeram and Managed by Carl Moore who has been doing the job since 2003.
Guyana has not won a Regional One-Day title since they beat Barbados in near darkness at Bourda in the 2005 KFC Cup final and last year they failed to qualify for the semi-finals for the first time since 2000.
Guyana face the Leeward Islands at Enmore in their opening game on Wednesday before facing Barbados and the West Indies under-19s in their other preliminary round games.
The Guyana squad read:- Ramnaresh Sarwan (Captain), Sewnarine Chattergoon, Travis Dowlin, Narsingh Deonarine, Shiv Chanderpaul, Chris Barnwell, Royston Crandon, Delbert Hicks, Esuan Crandon, Davendra Bishoo, Veerasammy Permaul, Assad Fudadin, Deon Ferrier, Trevon Garraway, Rabindranauth Seeram (Coach), Carl Moore (Manager).
