All GCC affair in Women’s final
After a slow start in the GT&T National Indoor Hockey Championships, GCC ‘A’ stormed back to make it to the final of this year’s competition after squeezing past Old Fort ‘A’ 4-3 in what was a ‘must-win’ game for them last Saturday evening at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
Meanwhile, Hikers ‘A’ proved their worth once again by brushing aside GCC ‘B’ 7-4. With their 3-1 defeat of the Hikers, GCC Spartans earned the opportunity to face their senior counterparts, Flora GCC Tigers in the ladies final.
Carib Degenerates edged Old Fort ‘B’ 7-6 in the men’s ‘B’ division, while GCC played to a 2-2 draw with the highly favoured Hikers in their under-19 clash.
In another exhilarating men’s ‘A’ division match-up, slow starters GCC had their best opening of the tournament when Kevin Spencer slotted home the first goal after seven minutes of play.
The high-energy game was evenly matched with strong goalkeeping at both ends, until Aderemi Simon drew Old Fort even with a blistering counterattacking move.
Just three minutes into the second half, Simon slammed home his second in similar fashion to the first, but this development seemed to have awakened the spirit in GCC as the Bourda boys poured on the pressure with a number of penalty corners and goal attempts.
Goalkeeper Mickel Smith eventually cracked when a ripper of a penalty corner from Devin Hooper found the back of the net in the 25th minute as did another penalty corner layoff to Dwayne Scott just one minute later that gave GCC a 3-2 lead.
Scott made it 4-2 in the 30th minute with a similar penalty corner strike.
Old Fort seemed to come alive in the dying minutes and their full court pressure paid off when Simon completed his hat-trick with seconds to go, but time expired on Old Fort, handing GCC a place in the final.
Hikers ‘A’ were never really tested in their ‘A’ division clash with GCC ‘B’.
While the young GCC campaigners brought their usual pressure game, the experienced Hikers showed good poise and composure to pick their openings.
Shane Samuels opened the scoring for Hikers with a penalty corner in the 3rd minute and added two more similar goals to complete his hat-trick in the match.
Captain Devin Munroe chipped in with a double, while Randy Hope and Robert France added one each for the 7-4 win.
GCC’s four goals came through a brace from Trevon Smith and one apiece by Shad Fernandes and Shaka Gill.
Carib Degenerates registered their first win of the tournament by defeating Old Fort ‘B’. Both Tristan Gomes and Brian Asregado scored doubles for Degenerates, while Timothy Jonas, Sheldon Corlette and Jonathan Yearwood netted one each.
Adrian and Dwight McCalman lashed in a brace each, while Dwayne Alleyne and Teon Joaquin completed the tally.
GCC Spartans showed quality as they controlled their final clash against Hikers ladies to emerge with win and a place in the final.
Dominique DeGroot put the Spartans up in the 16th minute, while Gabriella Xavier and Marzana Fiedtkou added one each.
Young Macaela Harding scored the lone goal for Hikers.
GCC boys held Hikers to a draw in the night’s under-19 feature.
Shaquille Assanah and Ryan Primo scored for Hikers, while the division goal-scoring leader Eric Hing had a double for GCC.
The final under-19 pool match features leaders and favourites Hikers against Old Fort, while the ladies final will be an all-GCC affair with Flora Tigers versus Spartans.
Hikers ‘B’ challenge Western Dragons in the men’s ‘B’ division final, while Hikers return again in the ‘A’ division final to touch gloves with the GCC ‘A’.
